Hello beauties! Have you ever went to the store and wanted to try a new foundation but you weren’t sure which shade to by? Well I’ve been in that very same position, and I’d say at times I still am. Finding the perfect foundation shade that matches your skin can be the hardest thing about makeup in my opinion. There’s all kinds of elements that go into finding that perfect match. Over the years I have found a few tips and tricks that help me find my shade when I can’t get the assistance I need in a store. Cause let’s face it there won’t always be a makeup consultant right beside you when you want to try out a new foundation. But if you use this tips I’m sure you’ll be able to come close to finding your foundation shade on your own.
Check out my latest post on my beauty faves to find out my favorite foundation from 2019.
Tip #1 – Know Your Undertones
Undertones are classified in three categories cool, neutral, and warm. To break down even further to be with a cool undertone your skin has pink, red or blue tinge. Your undertone is neutral if your skin has neither pink, red blue, yellow, gold or peach tinge. The last undertone is warm, and if your skin has a yellow, golden or peach tinge. If you need a visual explanation see the chart below.
Pro Tip: If your still unsure of your undertone, try wear gold or silver jewelry and see which tone complements your skin.
Tip #2 – How to Test Shades
There are many ways people test foundation but I prefer to test on my face. Only because my face and forearm complexion are two different shades. And depending on the season, especially in the summer, my face becomes two shades darker. In the warmer months I tend to get a little darker and during the cooler months, I’m a little lighter. When testing the foundation I pick three shades that I feel is closest to my complexion and pick the right shade as shown in the image above.
Pro Tip: blend the foundation in after applying for a more true match. Foundation should look like skin once blended.
Tip #3 – Shade Range
In my opinion there aren’t many brands on the market that have a wide foundation, shade, range. The top brands I look at with are: Fenty Beauty, Juvia’s Place and Huda Beauty. Although I have yet to try Huda Beauty, its on my wish list of products to test this year. You can also find a long shade range from these other brands too:
Huda Beauty Fenty Beauty
- Covergirl
- Bobbie Brown
- Cover FX
- Hourglass
- NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation
- Lancome
- Makeup Forever
- Estee Lauder
I hope these tips help you all when your in the store and I can’t find assistance in finding your foundation shade match. If you need more guidance check out this post.
