Welcome back! So your probably a little confused by the title because there is obviously no crown anywhere in sight. I’m talking about my hair and how I came to love it. When I first cut it last year January, I just knew my hair was going to be full of bouncy beautiful curls. However, my curls were more like limp waves trying to stay in sync with each other. I will say these curls did not appear overnight with a little splash of water like I thought it would. It took a whole year for me to figure how to make them last more than a day.
I’ve been natural for exactly a year and two months. The hardest task for me has been the amount of work and care I’ve had to put into trying to make my curls look decent. My relaxed hair was more manageable and man did I start to miss it after the first month of chopping it off. After I cut my hair I had no idea what to do with it. Part of me said why did you do this, but the other half of me was ready for the challenge. At times my hair was winning and I would look in the mirror and say, “okay you win this round.” It’s as if I had to learn my hair all over again and I must say when it came to styling my hair I would let it do its own thing and that was me just being lazy.
I’m not sure if it was because I hadn’t found the right hair products for me or if I was just using the products wrong all together. I do know one thing was for sure my hair could always use moisture but I may have overdone it and weighed my hair down at times. One day I was almost about to give up and get a relaxer but a thought ran across my mind. One of my teachers from Cosmetology school would always tell us, “You control the hair, it doesn’t control you!” The more I reminded myself of this, I noticed that I began to take control of my crown and care for it properly. I had to keep telling myself this over and over and finally one day it was as if the curls just decided to finally work with me and I was able to style my hair the way I wanted.
With that being said, no matter if your hair is natural, relaxed, short, long or you wear a wig; love your hair even at it’s worst stages. Everything needs time to adjust and grow. We just have to be patient and trust the process that it gets better overtime. Until next time be sure to keep your crown shining and healthy.
